강의제목 : 쉽고 재미있게 시작하는 Immersion 교육

 

Immersion이란 건 교육정책의 하나이다.

역사적인 배경을 쭈욱 살펴보면 더 이해가 빠를 것이다.

500년 latin이 주류... reading, comprehension 위주로 문법번역시 교수법 성행....

그러다 영어가 생긴 후

2차 세계대전 Audio 중심 전쟁이라는 특성상 말이 짧고 반복 강조하게 됨

영어보편화된 이후 TPR(Total Physical Response : 전신반응교수법으로 신체의 활동을 통해 언어를 가르치는 방법)으로 Whole language approch가 됨

영어붐이 일어났을 때, CBI(Content-based instruction)로 내용중심의 교수법 성행

최근... Immersion 정책

 

Immersion이란 영어의 흐름이 바뀌면서 영어권국가들이 이민자들을 위한 교수법이 아니라 영어정책이다.

수업과 영어의 비율이 50:50이거나 영어가 부분적으로 쓰인다고 해도 이것도 포함된다.

주로 Canada

 

What is Immersion?

* Simple teaching a content class(Math, Music, Science, etc) in a foreign lasguage is NOT IMMERSION.

 

* Language immersion is an aproach to foreign language instruction in which the curricular activities are conducted in a foreign language.

 

* Immersion students acquire the necessary language skills to unerstand and communicate about the subnect matter set out in the school's program of instruction.

 

* "Generally speaking, at least 50 percent of instrunction during a given acdemic year must be provided through the second language for the program to be regarded as immersion. Programs in which one subject arts are thught through the second are generally identified as enciched second language programs." (1987, Fred Genesee of MacGill University)

 

영어수학책, 영어과학책, 영어음악책을 읽는 것, 그 교재로 수업하는 것은 immersion이 아니다.

immersion에는 문화적 배경, socila contents, speak,, academic writing, presentation, 인지 능력 등등을 다 포함한 것이다.

 

쉽게 풀면 language skills (말하기 듣기 쓰기 읽기) + subject matter(과목 또는 교과내용, 컨텐츠) + communite touch란 말

말하기 듣기 쓰기 읽기 등의 언어 기술로 과목들을 파헤치고 서로 의사소통하는 거라고 보면 된다.

What is content based instruction?

* The teaching of language through esposure to content that is interesting and relevant to learners.

* Contents is...

  subject matter

  topics or themes

  subjects that students are currently studying in elementary school class

 

그럼 무엇이 CBI인가? 교과내용, 주제, 소주제나 지금 공부하고 있는 화제에 대해서 내용 중심의 지도를 하는 것...쉽게 관심있는 부분에 대한 지도라고 보면 쉽겠다.

 

 

미국의 immersion 효과는 딱 두 가지 영어로 과학수업을 했을 때

긍정적인 반응, 과학을 좋아했던 아이가 영어까지 좋아하게 되거나

부정적인 반응, 과학과 영어들 둘다 싫어하게 되거나

하지만 결과적으로 긍정적인 결과가 약간 더 높은 grade로 나왔다고 한다.

 

Why is immesion an effective second language model?

* A meaningful social context

* A interesting content provides a motivating context for learnging communicative fuctions of the new language

* Intergral of a child's social and cognitive development

* Enhanced academic skills

 

예를 들어 UR(Underground Railroad)는 미국 노예해방을 위한 지하도로를 말하는 것인데 이는 교육이 변화하면 시험제도가 바뀐다는 걸 단편적으로 보여준다.

노예해방이라는 것에 대한 지식이 없으면 단순히 지하도로 알 수 있다.

UR은 academic skill words인 것이다.

 

What are the Goals of an immersion?

* to achieve competency in the foreign

* to acquire the smae L1 language skills

* to master content area skill

* to gain a greater understand other cultures

 

Conclusion

* The roles of the teacher

* Appropriate curricular and materials

* Student-centered approach

* Communicative approach

 

결론을 보면...

내용중심이ㅡ 교수법으로 과학, 수학 등 과목의 지식(content knowledge) 위에 4 skills(language skill)을 함께 가져가되 중심은 학생이 되어야 하며 연결(communicate)이 되어야한다는 것이다.
