공부를 하다보니 아동문학에도 권위있는 상들이 많이 있다는 걸 알게 되었습니다.
애들이 책을 본격적으로 읽을 때가 되었으니 상을 받은 작품들을 하나 둘 찾아가며
읽히는 것도 좋은 방법이 될 것 같습니다.
존 뉴베리는 영국사람인데 상은 미국에서 만들어서 수여를 하고 있습니다.
1921년에 제정이 되어서 1922년부터 수여을 했다고 합니다.
심사는 미국사서협회에서 하는데 오랜(?) 도서관 문화를 가진 나라답게 사서들의
입김이 막강하다고 합니다. 미국이란 나라가 짧은 역사를 만회하기 위해서 수 많은
도서관을 짓고, 수 많은 잡지를 창간하고, 수 많은 상을 만들어서 사람들을 자극했다고
합니다. 뚜렷한 목적을 가지고 돈질(?)을 하면 뭔가 되긴 되나 봅니다.
수여대상은 미국에 살고 있는 사람이 쓴 1년 동안의 작품들 중에서 미국적 가치를
잘 반영하고 있고, 잘 만들어진 책에 상을 준다고 하네요.
뉴베리상을 받은 작품만 골라서 읽혀도 아이들한테 많은 도움이 될 것 같습니다.
다만, 미국적 가치를 충실히 담고 있기 때문에 부모가 먼저 내용을 걸러야 하는
작업이 필요합니다. 국내에도 많은 작품이 번역되어 출간되었겠지만, 어떤 제목으로
나와 있는지 알 수가 없네요. 직접 찾아보시는 것도 좋을 듯~^^
뭐, 이 상을 받을 욕심은 없지만 굳이 미국에 살고, 미국에서 출간된 책에만 상을
주어야 하는지 불만입니다. 상이야 주는 사람 맘이라지만...
